US Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lael Brainard said that it would be "appropriate soon" for the US central bank to reduce the pace of its aggressive monetary policy tightening. Investors were also encouraged by a meeting between the US and Chinese leaders at the G20 summit. Shares in Amazon fell by 2.3% after the New York Times reported that the tech giant was planning to lay off about 10,000 people in corporate and technology jobs starting as soon as this week. At the close, the Dow Jones index was lower by 211 points or 0.6% after earlier being up 216 points earlier in the session. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.9%. The Nasdaq index was down by 127 points or 1.1%.

The Australian sharemarket finished only slightly lower on Monday, after hitting a fresh 5-month high this morning and follows three straight weeks of gains for the ASX 200. Mining and energy stocks rose strongly after commodity prices advanced, Chinese regulators announced support for their property sector and the easing of some Covid rules.

Investors continued to favour technology stocks and smaller companies. Shares in Apple rose 1.9%, Amazon lifted 4.3%, Tesla rose 2.8% and Microsoft lifted 1.7%. Shares in companies exposed to the Chinese economy rose on news that the country will ease Covid restrictions. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 32.5 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.9%. The Nasdaq index gained 209 points or 1.9%. Over the week the Dow rose 4.1%; the S&P 500 rose 5.9%; and the Nasdaq lifted 8.1% - the biggest gain since March.

Signs of cooling consumer prices in October raised hopes that the US Federal Reserve would soon start scaling down the size of interest-rate hikes. The data prompted traders to adjust their rate hike bets, with odds of a 50 basis point rate hike in December jumping to 73.5%. Shares of Amazon (+12.2%), Apple (+8.9%), Meta Platforms (+10.3%), Microsoft (+8.2%) and Tesla (+7.4%) all soared. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 1,201 points or 3.7%, the most since May 18, 2020. The S&P 500 index rose by 5.5%, the most since April 6, 2020. The Nasdaq index gained 761 points or 7.4%, the most since March 24, 2020.

There is uncertainty about the results of the midterm elections. Republicans are still favoured to win control of the House of Representatives. But the Senate race remains in the balance. Investors are now focussing on inflation data to be released on Thursday. Shares in Walt Disney fell 13.2% after the company reported more losses from its steaming video business. Shares in Meta Platforms rose 5.2% as the Facebook-parent said it would let go of 13% of its workforce, or more than 11,000 employees. Energy lost 4.9%. Weighing on investor sentiment was news that cryptocurrency exchange Binance had walked away from a bailout deal to acquire FTX. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was down by 647 points or 2.0%. The S&P 500 index fell by 2.1% and the Nasdaq index lost 263 points or 2.5%.
