The Australian sharemarket rose by 0.58%, improving for a fourth day and hitting a near 2-month high in the process. All eyes remain on the US midterm elections and Thursday’s inflation data. Mining stocks rose most, led by gold producer St Barbara Mines (SBM).

Traders awaited midterm election results. All 435 House of Representatives seats and 35 Senate seats are on the ballot. Traders expect the House of Representatives to be won by Republicans with the Senate too close to call. So-called political gridlock is seen as positive for the sharemarket as it could crimp White House plans for more government spending. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up 334 points or 1.0%. The Australian sharemarket edged higher for a third straight day ahead of US midterm elections and the latest on US inflation due Thursday. Banks bounced back from Monday’s heavy declines, while lithium miners, The a2 Milk Company (A2M) and The Lottery Corporation (TLC) all improved.

Investors are focussed on midterm election results and inflation data over the week. Shares in Walgreens Boots Alliance gained 4.1% as VillageMD, a primary care provider backed by the pharmacy chain, said it will acquire Summit Health in a deal valued at nearly US$9 billion. Shares in Meta Platforms rose 6.5% on reports that it was planning to cut staff numbers. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up 424 points or 1.3%. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.0% and the Nasdaq index lifted by 89 points or 0.9%.

A mixed jobs report raised hopes that the Federal Reserve could scale back future rate hikes. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up 402 points or 1.3%. The local sharemarket recouped some of its losses yesterday, and managed to secure its second straight weekly win, after climbing 0.5%. The Energy sector was the strongest performer despite a tumble in oil prices overnight. Mining stocks also helped lift the index.

US sharemarkets tumbled on Thursday as investors worried that the US Federal Reserve would keep raising interest rates for longer than previously anticipated. Apple (-4.2%), Microsoft (-2.7%) and Alphabet (-4.1%) shares all slid as US treasury yields climbed. Shares of Qualcomm (-7.7%), Roku (-4.6%) and Fortinet (-13.7%) slumped on weak forecasts. Royal Caribbean Cruises shares rose 8.3% despite mixed results, while Etsy shares jumped 14.3% after beating revenue estimates. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 146.5 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index dipped 1.1% and the Nasdaq index fell by 182 points or 1.7%.
