Hawkish remarks from US Federal Reserve officials prompted another surge in US government bond yields. Earnings results were mixed with Tesla's (-6.7%) sales disappointing, but IBM (+4.7%), AT&T (+7.7%) and chemicals giant Dow (-0.4%) all topped analysts' forecasts. Shares of insurer Allstate dropped 12.9% as its third quarter was impacted by Hurricane Ian. The Dow Jones index fell by 90 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index dipped 0.8%. The Nasdaq index shed 66 points or 0.6%.

A surge in US government bond yields on investor expectations of bigger interest rate hikes dampened sentiment. Shares of Abbott Laboratories fell 6.5% after reporting lower-than-expected growth in international medical device sales. Netflix shares jumped 13.1% after reversing customer losses. United Airlines (+5%), Procter & Gamble (+0.9%) and Travelers (+4.4%) all posted upbeat earnings results. The Dow Jones index fell by 100 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index dipped 0.7%. The Nasdaq index shed 92 points or 0.9%.

US sharemarkets advanced on Tuesday as strong earnings results helped extend a rally that began on Monday. Shares of Goldman Sachs gained 2.3% after reporting a smaller-than-expected drop in quarterly profit. Shares of aerospace and defence company Lockheed Martin jumped 8.7% after a third quarter profit beat. And while Johnson & Johnson (-0.4%) beat market expectations for earnings per share, the company narrowed its full-year guidance. Salesforce shares gained 4.3% after a media report that activist investor Starboard Value LP has picked up stake in the software giant. The Dow Jones index rose by 338 points or 1.1%. The S&P 500 index also gained 1.1%. And the Nasdaq index added 97 points or 0.9%.

The Australian sharemarket surged by 1.7%, which was enough to recoup Monday’s declines thanks to gains across 10 of 11 sectors. Gold miner St Barbara (SBM) fell most, slumping by 21% after equipment availability contributed to lower production, while costs surged by close to 70%.

US stocks were supported by news of the reversal of a proposed UK fiscal plan as well as encouraging US bank earnings figures. Shares in Bank of America rose 6.1% after the lender reported a surge in third quarter net interest income. Shares in Bank of New York Mellon also lifted by 5.1% as the lender reported a 44% lift in net interest revenue. The banks sector rose 3.6%. Mega cap growth stocks like Amazon (up 6.5%) and Apple (up 2.9%) also advanced. The Dow Jones index rose by 551 points or 1.9%. The S&P 500 index rose by 2.7%. And the Nasdaq index rose by 354 points or 3.4%.

Inflation expectations rose, raising expectations for rate hikes. The University of Michigan's preliminary October reading of consumer sentiment showed one-year inflation expectations rose to 5.1% from 4.7%. Bank shares rose after quarterly results from JPMorgan Chase (+1.7%); Citigroup (+0.7%) and Wells Fargo (+1.9%). Shares in supermarket firm Kroger lost 7.3% after it said it would buy smaller rival Albertsons in a $24.6 billion deal. Tesla shares slumped 7.5% on reports that it had put on hold plans to launch battery cell production at its plant outside Berlin. The Dow Jones index fell by 404 points or 1.3%. The S&P 500 index lost 2.4%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 328 points or 3.1%. Over the week the Dow rose 1.2%; S&P 500 fell 1.5%; and Nasdaq fell 3.1%
