US sharemarkets lifted to fresh record highs on Thursday on trade deal optimism. Trade bellwethers Caterpillar (+1.1%) and Boeing (+1.6%) were amongst the top performers. Chipmaker Qualcomm's shares rose by 7.1% after reporting a strong earnings result. Around an hour before the close of trade, the Dow Jones was up by around 208 points or 0.8%. The S&P500 lifted by 0.4%. The Nasdaq was up by around 33 points or 0.4%

The Aussie market has enjoyed its best daily performance in three weeks with the ASX 200 lifting 66 points or 1% to 6726.6. Gains were rather broad based but it was the big four banks contributing most to improvements. National Bank (NAB) rose 2.2% despite announcing a 11% slide in cash profit to $5.1 billion and cutting its final dividend by 16%. Only the energy sector ended in negative territory.

A lack of negative surprises in the NAB’s full year results has pushed bank stocks higher in early trade on Thursday. Energy is the only declining sector weighed down by lower oil prices in the last day.

US sharemarkets were generally weaker on Wednesday. There were wire reports indicating that signing of the US-China trade deal may be delayed to December.

Local shares have faded from a positive start to end at the lowest levels of the day. The ASX 200 closed 36.9pts or 0.55% weaker at 6660 with the lone improvement coming from the materials sector. Losses were rather broad based with tech names, healthcare and consumer stocks among the major weights. National Bank (NAB) fell ahead of its FY19 earnings release tomorrow.

US sharemarket indexes generally remained in record territory on
Tuesday. With just over an hour of trade to go the Dow Jones was
up by 85 points or 0.3% and the Nasdaq was up by 14 points or
0.2%. But the broader S&P 500 index was up just 0.5 points or less
than 0.1%. Losses in healthcare and energy matched gains in
financials.

The RBA left rates on hold repeating a recent mantra that "after a soft patch in the second half of last year, a gentle turning point appears to have been reached.’ Banks recovered with the exception of Westpac (WBC), which fell by as much as 4.5% as investors took the first opportunity to respond to yesterday’s poor earnings result.

The Reserve Bank of Australia has left the cash rate at 0.75% after cutting rates in June, July and October, each by 25 basis points. There have now been 15 rate cuts since November 2011 with the cash rate cut from 4.75%.

The local market is giving up all of its early gains with the ASX 200 mostly flat heading into lunch. The benchmark index was up by 40 points at its best levels but has since fallen back with the major drag being Westpac (WBC), slumping 4.5% and wiping off roughly 14 points from the ASX 200 index alone. WBC has resumed trade after being in a trading halt following its full year earnings release yesterday.
