The Australian sharemarket surged by 1.75% on Friday following a strong lift on Wall Street despite a hotter than expected US inflation report. All 11 sectors of the ASX rose, led by energy stocks, which snapped a four-day losing streak as oil prices rose.

US sharemarkets rebounded on Thursday, brushing aside interest rate hike jitters after a surprise rise in inflation. Shares of Walgreens Boots Alliance pharmacies rose 5.4% following better-than-estimated fourth-quarter results. Delta Air Lines' (+4.0%) quarterly profit missed Wall Street estimates but the carrier expects travel demand to remain robust. Shares of Chevron gained 4.9% as oil prices spiked, and bank stocks Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan rose 4.0% and 5.6%, respectively. The Dow Jones index rose by 828 points or 2.8%, recovering from a 549 point drop earlier in the session. The S&P 500 index lifted 2.6%. And the Nasdaq index gained 232 points or 2.2%.

The Australian sharemarket finished just 0.07% lower on Thursday, as investors remained cautious ahead of tonight’s key US inflation data. Major banks rose strongly for a second day following Bank of Queensland’s stronger margins, Qantas surged by close to 10% after flagging bigger profits and Medibank was in a trading halt as it became the latest victim of a cyberattack.

US sharemarkets eased in late trade on Tuesday with indications that the Bank of England would support the country's bond market for just three more days. The S&P bank index fell 2.6% ahead of key bank profit results on Friday. After being up 405 points earlier in the session, the Dow Jones index ended higher by 36 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.7%. And the Nasdaq index lost 116 points or 1.1%.

Investors digested speeches from Federal Reserve officials. Also investors braced for the start of earnings season. The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index fell by 3.4% to a 2-year low, after the Biden administration published a set of export controls on Friday, including a measure to cut China off from certain semiconductor chips made anywhere in the world with US equipment. After tracking a 475-point range, the Dow Jones index ended lower by 94 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.8%. And the Nasdaq index lost 110 points or 1.0%.

US sharemarkets were weaker on Friday after a solid jobs report laid the foundation for more rate hikes. Shares in AMD fell 13.9% as the chipmaker's third-quarter revenue estimates were about US$1 billion lower than previously forecast. The Dow Jones index ended lower by 630 points or 2.1%. The S&P 500 index fell by 2.8%. And the Nasdaq index lost 421 points or 3.8%. Over the week the Dow added 2%; S&P 500 rose 1.5%; and the Nasdaq gained 0.7%.
