The Australian sharemarket extended its winning streak to a third day, with the ASX 200 lifting by 0.79%. Due to declines on Monday and Tuesday, the index finished almost completely flat this week ahead of key US inflation data and a speech by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell tonight.

Investors focused on the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole conference for clues about the central bank's policy outlook. Shares of Nvidia rose 4.0% after the chipmaker gave a weaker-than-expected quarterly forecast that many investors viewed as signalling the worst of a sales downturn may be over. Apple (+1.5%) and Amazon.com (+2.6%) shares both lifted. But Tesla shares slid 0.4% after its 3-for-1 stock split came into effect. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index rose by 323 points or 1.0%. The S&P 500 index lifted 1.4% and the Nasdaq index added 208 points or 1.7%.

The Australian sharemarket rose for a second day, with the ASX 200 lifting by 0.7%. However, the index slumped on Monday and Tuesday due partly to caution ahead of a key three-day annual Symposium which kicks off tonight.

Real estate led gains, up 0.7% with consumer discretionary up 0.6%. Shares in Nordstrom lost 20% after the retailer cut its annual revenue and profit forecasts. The Dow Jones index rose by 60 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.3%. And the Nasdaq index rose by 50 points or 0.4%.

The Australian sharemarket edged higher by 0.5%, following back-to-back losses around 1%. Gains from energy stocks, miners and banks helped keep the market positive. Domino’s Pizza, Tabcorp, Wisetech, Iluka, Netwealth, Worley, Sonic Health and G8 Education rose after handing down their latest profit results. Telstra fell by 2.4% after trading ex-dividend. Coles lost ground and warned that increasing costs remain a headwind for the group.

Economic data was soft but a higher oil price boosted energy stocks. The energy sector rose by 3.6%. Technology stocks also rose. But real estate fell by 1.5%. The Dow Jones index lost 154 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.2%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 0.3 points or less than 0.1%.
