Investors fret that a speech by US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell on Friday will confirm that the aggressive monetary policy stance will continue until inflation is under control. Technology stocks fell as treasury yields rose. Shares in Nvidia fell 4.6%, Amazon fell 3.6% and Microsoft fell 2.9%. Shares in cinema chain AMC Entertainment fell by 42% after UK-based rival Cineworld Group warned of a possible bankruptcy filing. The Dow Jones index lost 643 points or 1.9%. The S&P 500 index lost 2.1%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 324 points or 2.6%.

The ASX 200 fell by 0.95% on Monday, with all 11 sectors and eight in every 10 companies losing ground. Shares in bedding company Adairs and building products maker Adbri were the two biggest decliners after both handed down declining profits.

Longer-term bond yields rose, weighing on technology stocks. Shares in Apple fell 1.5% and Microsoft fell by 1.4%. The S&P banking index fell by 2.1%. Shares in Bed Bath & Beyond fell by 40.5% as billionaire investor Ryan Cohen sold his stake in the struggling home goods retailer. The Dow Jones index lost 292 points or 0.9%. The S&P 500 index dropped by 1.3%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 260 points or 2.0%. Over the week the Dow fell 0.2%; the S&P 500 fell by 1.2%; and the Nasdaq fell 2.6%.

The Australian sharemarket finished largely flat on Friday, however still extended its winning streak to a fifth straight week. Gains from our mining and energy stocks today, were largely offset by losses from the banks and healthcare stocks.

Shares in Cisco Systems rose by 5.8% after issuing an upbeat sales forecast. But shares in Kohl's Corp slid by 7.7% after the retailer cut its full-year sales and profit forecasts. Shares in Apple fell 0.2%, Microsoft shares fell 0.4% and Walmart lost 0.3%. The Dow Jones index rose by 19 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index lifted by 0.2%. And the Nasdaq index gained 27 points or 0.2%.

The Australian sharemarket fell by 0.21%, losing ground for the first time this week on another big day for earnings. A key jobs report showed that close to 41,000 jobs were lost in July, raising the possibility of a smaller rate hike in September by the RBA.

US sharemarkets were lower on Wednesday as investors digested the minutes of the last Federal Reserve meeting. Shares in Target fell 2.7%, in response to weak sales results. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 172 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.7%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 164 points or 1.3%.
