US sharemarkets were mixed on Tuesday. Shares of Walmart climbed 5.1% after the retailer forecast a smaller drop in full-year profit than previously projected. Home improvement retailer Home Depot surpassed estimates for quarterly sales with its share price up 4.1%. But rising US government bond yields weighed on high-growth technology shares. The Dow Jones index closed higher for a fifth day, up by 240 points or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.2%. But the Nasdaq index dipped by 25.5 points or 0.2%.

The Australian sharemarket rose by 0.58% on Tuesday, briefly hitting a 10-week high in the process. While just 83 stocks on the ASX 200 rose, BHP Group surged by 4% after handing down its second largest full year underlying profit on record thanks partly to surging coal prices.

The world's biggest miner has reported a full year net profit of $30.90 billion compared to $11.30 billion for the same period a year earlier. The result was driven by record coal and copper prices. Removing one off items, underlying profit was up by 39% to $23.82 billion. Record free cash flow paved the way for a better than expected dividend of $1.75 a share, bringing the total payout for the year to $3.25 per share, up 8% on the year prior and representing a 77% pay out ratio.

US sharemarkets were firmer on Monday. Investors digested weak economic data in the US and China. Some investors believe that the soft data will temper the Federal Reserve rate hike expectations. The Dow Jones index closed higher by 151 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.4% and the Nasdaq index lifted by 81 points or 0.6%.

US sharemarkets were firmer on Friday on hopes that inflation has peaked. All of the 11 S&P 500 sectors posted gains with banks up 1.4%. Semiconductors gained 3%. According to Refinitiv estimates, S&P 500 companies posted 9.7% earnings growth in the June quarter, above earlier forecasts of 5.6%. The Dow Jones index closed up by 424 points or 1.3%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.7% and the Nasdaq index lifted by 268 points or 2.1%. Over the week the Dow rose by 2.9%; the S&P 500 rose by 3.2%; and the Nasdaq rose by 3.1%.

US producer prices unexpectedly fell in July for the first time in more than two years as energy costs declined. But with the US Federal Reserve set to keep its monetary policy tight, shares of big technology names like Tesla (-2.6%) and Amazon (-1.4%) both fell. Walt Disney shares lifted 4.7% after the media giant posted stronger-than-expected subscriber numbers for the last quarter. The Dow Jones index closed up by 27 points or 0.1%. But the S&P 500 index fell by 0.1% and the Nasdaq index slid 75 points or 0.6%.
