Softer-than-expected US inflation data fuelled trader bets that the US Federal Reserve could pivot to a smaller pace of interest rate hikes. Shares of Meta Platforms (+5.8%), Apple (+2.6%), Alphabet (+2.6%) and Amazon (+3.5%) all lifted. Tesla shares lifted 3.9% after it was revealed CEO Elon Musk had sold US$6.9 billion worth of shares in the electric vehicle maker to finance a potential deal for Twitter. Walt Disney was the best performer in the Dow Jones index, rising 4.0% ahead of its earnings result. The Dow closed up 535 points or 1.6%. The S&P 500 index gained 2.1% and the Nasdaq index climbed 361 points or 2.9%.

The Australian Sharemarket has edged lower so far on Wednesday, with the ASX 200 down by around 0.1% (was down by as much as 0.6% in early trade). The Tech sector is falling most and is having its worst day in around 2 months. Resource sectors are climbing modestly.

Investors awaited inflation data. And higher-than-expected data on unit labor costs added to inflationary concerns. Shares in Micron Technology fell 3.7% after the memory-chipmaker cut its fourth-quarter revenue forecast. The Dow Jones index fell by 58 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.4% and the Nasdaq index fell by 150.5 points or 1.2%.

The Australian sharemarket edged higher by 0.13% on Tuesday, lifting for a third session and briefly hitting a near 2-month high in the process. The gains were modest however, ahead of a highly anticipated update on US inflation due Wednesday night.

The Australian Sharemarket has kicked off trade in positive territory, with the ASX 200 up by a modest ~0.05%. While an improvement in the price of most commodities overnight has helped the mining & energy sectors, losses in the Financials sector are weighing on the market.

Investors digested news that the US$430 billion Inflation Reduction Act had passed the Senate. Automakers rose 3-4% in response to the news with shares in Ford up 3.1% and General Motors up 4.2%. The Information Technology sector lagged. Chipmaker Nvidia Corp slid 6.3% as the company said it expects second-quarter revenue to decline 19% from the prior quarter due to weakness in gaming. The Dow Jones index rose by 29 points or 0.2% after being up 306 points. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.1% and the Nasdaq index fell by 13 points or 0.1%.
