The Australian Sharemarket has kicked the week off on a softer note despite a strong jobs report released in the US on Friday. The Materials and Energy sectors are the only two sectors in positive territory and this follows a lift in the price of most commodities

Technology stocks fell after the strong jobs reported suggested that the aggressive rate hiking campaign by the Federal Reserve will continue. Shares in Tesla fell 6.6%. Shares in Lyft surged almost 17% after the ride-hailing firm posted record quarterly earnings and raised profit targets. The Dow Jones index rose by 77 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.2% and the Nasdaq index fell by 63 points or 0.5%. Over the week the Dow fell 0.1%; the S&P 500 rose 0.4%; and the Nasdaq gained 2.2%.

The Aussie sharemarket finished near session highs and rose for the first time in three days, with the ASX 200 up 40.7pts or 0.58 per cent, to 7015.6. The mining sector did much of the heavy lifting today after it rose by 1.9 per cent – the strongest rally it’s had this week. Gold miners climbed on the back of a 1.7 per cent increase in the price of gold futures. Tech stocks failed to maintain their early improvements and finished 1.3 per cent lower. The Energy sector also fell after shares of local oil producers came under pressure on the back of a retreating oil price.

The Australian Sharemarket is lifting higher for the third time this week despite a mixed performance across global equities overnight. The Materials sector is doing most of the heavy lifting, with Energy stocks falling for the fourth straight day.

The energy sector fell 3.6% in response to a lower oil price. Banks fell 1.2% but technology shares rose with Advanced Micro Devices up 5.9% and Amazon up 2.2%. The Dow Jones index fell by 86 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.1% and the Nasdaq index lifted by 52 points or 0.4%

Investors were encouraged by a gain in the ISM services index and a lift in factory orders. And there were strong profit forecasts from PayPal and CVS Health. Shares in PayPal rose by 9.3% and CVS Health rose 6.4%. Shares in Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (+5.9%) and Starbucks (+4.3%) also rose after earnings reports. And shares in Moderna rose 16% after announcing a share buyback plan. The Dow Jones index rose by 416 points or 1.3%. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.6% and the Nasdaq index lifted by 319 points or 2.6%.

The Australian sharemarket snapped six-straight days of gains and posted its worst daily decline in around two weeks, after the ASX 200 shed 22.2pts or 0.32%, to 6975.9. The index managed to recoup some losses after the mining sector clawed back a 1.5 per cent decline and finished 0.35 per cent higher. The material sector’s recovery was supported by a rally in lithium miners, following a parliamentary decision to cut emission by 43 per cent by 2030. Elsewhere in the market, Tech shares climbed 2.2 per cent - their best day in around two weeks - and the Financials sector snapped six-straight days of gains, with the Big 4 banks all down.
