Data showed a second straight quarterly contraction of the economy raised hopes of less aggressive interest rate hikes ahead. Shares in Meta Platforms (owner of Facebook and Instagram) fell by 5.2% after reporting its first drop in quarterly revenue. The Dow Jones index rose by 332 points or 1.0%. The S&P 500 index added 1.2% and the Nasdaq index lifted by 130 points or 1.1%.

US Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank will slow the pace of interest rate hikes at some point, while adding that officials would refrain from offering "clear guidance" on the size of their next move. The Nasdaq index soared after Google parent Alphabet (+7.7%), Microsoft (+6.7%) and Texas Instruments (+6.7%) all posted solid earnings results. The Dow Jones index rose by 436 points or 1.4%. The S&P 500 index added 2.6% and the Nasdaq index lifted by 470 points or 4.1%.

The Australian sharemarket edged higher for a second day, with the ASX 200 lifting by 0.26%. Local stocks rose after the lift in June quarter inflation was slightly softer than expected. The market is expecting the Reserve Bank to raise rates by 0.5% next week.

Shares in retail giant Walmart fell 7.6% after delivering a profit warning. Investors were also nervous ahead of the interest rate decision. But shares in Coca-Cola (+1.6%) and McDonalds (+2.7%) rose after releasing earnings results. The Dow Jones index lost 228.5 points or 0.7%; the S&P 500 index fell by 1.2%; and the Nasdaq index lost 220 points or 1.9%.
