The Australian sharemarket finished slightly higher, with the ASX 200 lifting by 0.26% after a flat finish on Monday. This is ahead of a key inflation report due on Wednesday.

Mid-Session 26 Jul 22: ASX 200 flat for a second day

The Australian sharemarket is almost completely flat for a second session ahead of a busy few days for global markets. Gains from energy and mining stocks are contributing most to the ASX 200.

Morning Report 26 Jul 22: US sharemarkets were mixed on Monday

Investors awaited key earnings results and the Federal Reserve rate decision. Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and Meta Platforms are among companies to report earnings this week. The Dow Jones index rose by 91 points or 0.3%; the S&P 500 index rose by 0.1%; and the Nasdaq index lost 51 points or 0.4%.

Market Close 25 Jul 22: ASX 200 finishes flat

The Australian sharemarket finished flat on Monday as a very busy week kicked off for investors. A key update on inflation, profit results from a third of S&P500 companies (including major tech stocks), plenty of data and Rio Tinto's half year earnings are all due in the days ahead.

Morning Report 25 Jul 22: US sharemarkets eased on Friday

Disappointing earnings from Snap weighed on social media and ad tech firms. Shares in Snap fell by 39.1%. Shares in Meta Plaforms fell 7.6% and Alphabet (Google) lost 5.6%. The Dow Jones index fell by 138 points or 0.4% and the S&P 500 index fell by 0.9%. The Nasdaq index lost 225 points or 1.9%. Over the week the Dow rose 2%; the S&P 500 rose 2.6%; and the Nasdaq lifted 3.3%.

Market Close 22 Jul 22: ASX 200 has best week in 4 months

While the Australian sharemarket finished flat on Friday, the ASX 200 rose by 2.8% this week; its strongest improvement in four months. Gains from banks, miners and tech stocks helped most.

Morning Report 22 Jul 22: US sharemarkets advanced on Thursday

Tesla shares rose by 9.8% after its quarterly results beat estimates. But shares of AT&T fell 7.6% after lowering its full-year free cash flow guidance. United Airlines' results disappointed, pushing the stock down by 10.2%. And Carnival shares dipped 11.2% after the cruise company announced it was selling US$1 billion of stock. The Dow Jones index rose by 162 points or 0.5% and the S&P 500 index rose 1.0%, posting its biggest three-day rally since May 27. The Nasdaq index also added 162 points or 1.4%.

Market Close 21 Jul 22: ASX 200 rose by ~0.5%

The Australian sharemarket rose in the final 30 minutes of the session, with the ASX 200 up 0.5%. Woodside, Santos, Newcrest and Evolution released quarterly production results this morning.
