Shares in Citigroup rose 13.2% after its profit beat expectations. And shares in Wells Fargo rose 6.2% after its earnings result. The S&P Banking index jumped 5.8% - its biggest one-day gain since January 2020. The Dow Jones index rose by 658 points or 2.2%, the S&P 500 index lifted 1.9%. And the Nasdaq index added 201 points or 1.8%. Over the week, the Dow lost 0.2%; the S&P 500 lost 0.9%; and the Nasdaq fell by 1.6%.

Shares of JPMorgan Chase (-3.5%) and Morgan Stanley (-0.4%) both fell after the US banks reported a slump in quarterly profits and warned of an impending US economic slowdown. Food group Conagra Brands' shares tumbled 7.3% after issuing a disappointing annual earnings forecast. But shares of Apple were up by 2.1%. The Dow Jones index fell by 143 points or 0.5% and the S&P 500 index slid 0.3%. But the Nasdaq index added 4 points or less than 0.1%.

Investors digested surprisingly strong US inflation data, fuelling fears of a larger-than-expected interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve later this month. Shares of Delta Air Lines slid 4.5% after its second-quarter earnings missed expectations. But Tesla shares climbed 1.7% with Twitter shares up 7.9% as the social media company sued Elon Musk. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 208.5 points or 0.7% and the S&P 500 index dipped by 0.5%. The technology-heavy Nasdaq index shed 17 points or 0.2%.

Growing signs of a looming recession kept investors cautious ahead of Wednesday's US inflation data. PepsiCo shares dipped 0.6%, despite beating its quarterly earnings estimates. Shares of apparel retailer Gap fell 5.0% after its CEO stepped down. But shares of Boeing jumped 7.4% after the plane maker's June aircraft deliveries were the highest since March 2019. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 192.5 points or 0.6% and the S&P 500 index dipped by 0.9%. The Nasdaq index shed 108 points or 1.0%.
