Mid-Session 12 Jul 22: Aussie market edging higher

The Australian sharemarket is edging higher on Tuesday, following a 1.1% fall on Monday, as investors await a key update on US inflation tomorrow night, together with data on Aussie employment and China's economy later this week.

Morning Report 12 Jul 22: US sharemarkets fell on Monday

Investors awaited a key reading on US inflation and the start of the earnings season for clues on whether the US economy is headed for a recession. Shares of Twitter sank 11.3% after Elon Musk terminated a deal worth US$44 billion to buy the social media company. A slide in megacap tech names Apple (-1.5%), Alphabet (-3.1%), Amazon (-3.3%) and Tesla (-6.6%) also weighed on major US indexes. Nike (-2.6%) and Caterpillar (-2.3%) were the biggest drags on the Dow Jones index. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 164 points or 0.5% and the S&P 500 index dipped by 1.2%. The Nasdaq index shed 263 points or 2.3%.

Market Close 11 Jul 22: ASX 200 wipes out half last week’s gains

The Australian sharemarket slumped by 1.14% on Monday, finishing at the session low and wiping out approximately half last week's gains. Weaker US futures, fears of potential Covid related China lockdowns and a busy week for markets all might have played a part.

Morning Report 11 Jul 22: US sharemarkets were mixed on Friday

A strong US jobs report alleviated recession fears but cleared the path for the US Federal Reserve to keep raising interest rates to combat inflation. Shares of Twitter slid 5.1% after the Washington Post reported that Elon Musk was planning to terminate his US$44 billion takeover offer. The Dow Jones index fell by 46 points or 0.2% and the S&P 500 index dipped 0.1%. But the Nasdaq index added 14 points or 0.1%. For the week, the Nasdaq gained 4.6%, while the S&P 500 and Dow advanced 1.9% and 0.8%, respectively.

Market Close 8 Jul 22: Best week since mid-March

The Australian sharemarket rose by 0.45%, lifting for a fourth time in five days and recording its largest advance since mid-March. A weaker US dollar helped push commodities and resource stocks higher.

Mid-Session 8 Jul 22: Aussie market higher for a second day

The Australian sharemarket is lifting for a second day thanks mainly to improvements from our major mining and energy stocks. The ASX 200 is currently on course for its strongest weekly advance since mid-March.

Morning Report 8 Jul 22: US sharemarkets were firmer on Thursday

Traders bet that aggressive rate hikes from the Federal Reserve would be successful in stemming inflationary pressures. GameStop Corp rose 15.1% as the video game retailer's board approved a four-for-one stock split. Chipmakers rose after strong earnings figures from Samsung. Investors await the pivotal job report on Friday. The Dow Jones index rose by 347 points or 1.1%. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.5% and the Nasdaq index was up by 259 points or 2.3%.

Market Close 7 Jul 22: Aussie market recoups Wednesday’s losses

The Australian sharemarket pushed higher on Thursday, lifting by 0.8%, ending at a session high and currently remaining on track to lift this week. A solid rebound from our mining stocks was the main driver.
