Investors became more confident about the Fed's inflation-fighting resolve. Shares in Rivian Automotive rose 10.4% after the electric vehicle maker confirmed production guidance. The Dow Jones index rose by 70 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.4% and the Nasdaq index was up by 40 points or 0.4%.

The Australian sharemarket gave back early gains, with the ASX 200 sliding by 0.5% and heading backwards for the first time this week. Heavy losses for our mining and energy stocks offset gains across most other sectors.

While the Aussie market was up briefly this morning, the ASX 200 has slipped into negative territory due to heavy declines across mining and energy sectors. Concerns of a slowdown in the global economy weighed on commodity prices overnight.

Concerns about global growth weighed on the energy sector (down 4.0%) and materials (down 2.0%). Traders await minutes from the June Federal Reserve meeting on Wednesday and the non-farm payrolls data (employment) on Friday. The Dow Jones index fell by 129 points or 0.4%. But the S&P 500 index rose by 0.2% and the Nasdaq index was up by 194 points or 1.8%.

The energy sector rose 4% as oil prices rose on continued concerns about near term crude supplies. Healthcare rose 0.7% and miners rose 1.4%. But real estate lost 2.6% and autos lost 1%. According to the Sentix reading, investor morale in the euro zone fell this month to its lowest level since May 2020. And euro zone producer prices rose less than expected in May. The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose by 0.5%. But while the German Dax index fell by 0.3%, the UK FTSE index rose by 0.9%. In London trade, shares of Rio Tinto were flat while shares in BHP rose by 0.9%.
