The Australian sharemarket has pushed higher this morning, following a solid lead from Wall Street ahead of a US long weekend. Our major miners are starting to drop however, following a heavy fall for iron ore.

The Australian sharemarket has fallen by 10% over the past financial year, as central banks scampered to unwind stimulus that had been put in place at the height of the Covid emergency. The Utilities and Energy sectors were the clear stand outs.

There was light trading ahead of a long holiday weekend. Gains were broad-based, led by utilities. The Dow Jones index rose by 322 points or 1.1%. The S&P 500 index lifted 1.1% with the Nasdaq index up by 99 points or 0.9%. Over the week the Dow fell by 1.3%; the S&P 500 fell by 2.2%; and the Nasdaq lost 4.1%.

The Australian sharemarket ran out of steam this afternoon, slipping by 0.43% and extending its losing streak to a third day. Mining and energy stocks remained the hardest hit, while the banks fading from earlier gains also weighed on the index.

The Australian sharemarket is edging higher following a 2% tumble on Thursday and the worst month and quarter in over two years. Energy and mining stocks are down most, held back by commodity prices declines.

US sharemarkets tumbled on Thursday after data showing a slowdown in consumer spending fuelled concerns about a US recession. Shares of Walgreens Boots Alliance shed 7.3% as its quarterly profit plunged. The Dow Jones index fell by 254 points or 0.8%. And the S&P 500 index lost 0.9% with the Nasdaq index down by 149 points or 1.3%. In the June quarter, the Dow fell 11.3% and the S&P 500 lost 16.4% - their worst quarters since the March quarter of 2020. The Nasdaq slid 22.4%, its worst quarterly stretch since 2008. Year-to-date the Dow shed 15.3%, its worst first half year since 1962. The S&P 500 dipped 20.6%, its worst first half since 1970 and the Nasdaq plunged 29.5%, its worst ever first half performance.
