US treasuries were little changed on Tuesday. US Federal Reserve policymakers Mary Daly and John Williams promised further rapid interest rate hikes to bring down high inflation, but pushed back against growing fears among investors that sharply higher borrowing costs will trigger a steep US economic downturn. US 10-year yields fell by 1 point to near 3.18% but US 2-year yields rose by 1 point to near 3.12%.

The Australian sharemarket rose by 0.86%, finishing at an intraday high and extending its winning streak to a fourth day in the process. Strong gains from resource stocks, led by BHP Group and Woodside helped most. Tech and retail stocks dominated the list of losers.

The Australian sharemarket is edging higher for a fourth day thanks to strong gains from resource stocks. Collins Foods - which operates 261 KFC restaurants in Australia - is standing out, lifting 12% after handing down stronger profit results.

US sharemarkets eased on Monday. While energy rose 2.8% in response to higher oil prices, technology stocks gave back some of Friday's gains. Communication services fell by 1.1%. Shares in cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global fell 10.8% on a broker downgrade. The Dow Jones index fell by 62 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.3% and the Nasdaq index fell by 83 points or 0.7%.

The Australian sharemarket rose by 1.94% on Monday, its best improvement in five months and its first three-day winning streak since mid-May. A 3% lift across US markets on Friday helped set the tone locally, with all 11 sectors closing higher. Our market is still down by ~7% in June.

US sharemarkets recorded solid gains on Friday. Banks rose 3.7% after all lenders passed the Federal Reserve stress tests. Shares in FedEx rose 7.2% after the parcel delivery company issued a stronger-than-expected full-year profit forecast. The Dow Jones index closed up by 823 points or 2.7%. The S&P 500 index added 3.1% and the Nasdaq index gained 375 points or 3.3%. Over the week the Dow rose by 5.4%; S&P 500 rose 6.4%; and the Nasdaq rose 7.5%.

The Australian sharemarket rose by 0.74% and recorded its first back-to-back gain of the month. While this was enough to push the ASX 200 1.6% higher over the week, it follows a 6.6% tumble last week due to increasing US recession fears and a large rate hike.
