The defensive S&P 500 utilities (+2.4%), consumer staples (+2.0) and healthcare (+2.2%) sectors countered declines in the energy (-3.8%) and materials (- 1.4%) sectors amid growing worries about a possible US recession. Technology shares outperformed as bond yields slipped, with Apple (+2.2%) and Microsoft (+2.3%) shares both higher. The Dow Jones index closed up by 194 points or 0.6%. The S&P 500 index added 1.0% and the Nasdaq index gained 179 points or 1.6%.

The Australian sharemarket rose by just 0.3% on Thursday, fading from this morning's gains of 0.66% and recording just its fifth improvement of the month. A slump in commodity prices weighed on our major mining and energy stocks.

It was a volatile session as investors mulled comments by the Fed chair. The energy sector fell 4.2% in response to lower oil prices. The Dow Jones index fell by 47 points or 0.2% after trading in a 612 point range. The S&P 500 index fell 0.1%; the Nasdaq index lost 16 points or 0.2%.

So-called mega cap growth and energy companies drove gains on bargain hunting. Shares in Apple rose 3.3% with Microsoft up 2.5% and shares in Tesla up 9.4%. In company news, shares in Kellogg rose 2.0% after the breakfast cereal maker said it was splitting into three companies. The Dow Jones index rose by 641 points or 2.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by 2.5% and the Nasdaq index lifted by 271 points or 2.5%.

The Australian sharemarket posted its best gain of the month, lifting by 1.4% and ending a seven-day losing streak in the process. Signs US stocks could kick off the holiday-shortened week higher and the RBA Governor flagging a likely 0.25% or 0.5% lift in the cash rate next month settled nerves.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index gained 1.0%, with bank stocks up 3.3%. European Central Bank (ECB) Chief Christine Lagarde reaffirmed plans to raise interest rates twice over the coming months. France's CAC 40 index added 0.6%, lagging other major indexes, after French President Emmanuel Macron lost an absolute majority in the country's parliamentary election. The German Dax index lifted 1.1% and the UK FTSE index gained 1.5%. In London trade, shares of Rio Tinto fell by 1.0% and BHP shares shed 1.6%.
