Investors digested the latest jobs report. Medical technology company Edwards Life Sciences (+4.5%) and gold miner Newmont (+4.2%) were the top performers in the S&P 500 index. Verizon Communications (+2.3%) led the Dow Jones index higher. Apple shares fell 0.2% after JP Morgan removed the stock from its analyst "focus list." The Dow Jones rose by 140 points or 0.4% and the S&P 500 added 0.3%. The Nasdaq index gained 41 points or 0.3%. Over the week, the Dow slipped 0.1%, but the S&P 500 rose 0.1% and the Nasdaq lifted 0.7%.

The Australian sharemarket ran out of steam in late trade with the ASX 200 easing by 0.08%. Strong gains from our mining and energy stocks fell short of offsetting losses in most other sectors. The ASX200 still rose for a third week and follows March's 6.4% jump.

US sharemarkets fell on Thursday on fading optimism for progress on Ukraine-Russia peace talks. Investors await the all-important monthly job figures on Friday. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 550 points or 1.6% and the S&P 500 index lost 1.6%. The Nasdaq index shed 222 points or 1.5%. In March, the Dow rose 2.3%; S&P 500 rose 3.6%; and the Nasdaq rose 3.4%. In the March quarter the S&P 500 fell by 4.9% and Nasdaq fell 9.1%.

The ASX 200 is set for a small gain at the start of trade on Thursday , as investors look to preserve a 6.6% gain in monthly terms. US sharemarkets fell on Wednesday as hopes faded for a de-escalation in the war in Ukraine and investors assessed the risks to US economic growth from accelerating inflation. Apple shares, which have risen for 11 consecutive sessions, fell by 0.7% after a report that it's working to bring more financial services in-house. Shares of Procter & Gamble also dipped 0.7% following a downgrade from JPMorgan. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 65 points or 0.2% and the S&P 500 index lost 0.6%, both snapping a 4-day winning streak. And the Nasdaq index shed 177 points or 1.2%.
