US inflation accelerated for a sixth successive month and peace talks between Ukraine and Russia failed. Shares of tech giants Apple (-2.7%) and Tesla (-2.4%) both slumped. But Amazon shares jumped 5.4% after the company announced a 20-for-1 stock split and US$10 billion buyback. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 112 points or 0.3% after being down 466 points at session lows. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.4% and the Nasdaq index shed 126 points or 1%.

The Australian sharemarket rose by 1.1%, following the best performance in close to two years for the S&P 500 last night. A 12% slump in oil pushed energy stocks lower but followed a 14-year high for the commodity a day earlier.

US sharemarkets rose on Wednesday, with sentiment lifted by a pullback in oil prices. Investors scooped up beaten down stocks. Megacap growth stocks led gains with Netflix (+5%), Microsoft (+4.6%) and Tesla (+4.2%) shares all higher. General Electric shares rose 3.5% as the company authorised a US$3 billion share buyback program. Shares of Bank of America jumped 6.4% with Salesforce.com shares up 5.8%. The Dow Jones index closed up by 654 points or 2% after being up 825 points at session highs. The S&P 500 index lifted 2.6%, posting its best day since June 2020. And the Nasdaq index added 460 points or 3.6%, its best trading session since November 2020.

Investors digested the news of a US ban on Russian oil imports. Banks rose 2.2% in response to higher bond yields. Shares in Caterpillar rose 6.8% in response to a broker upgrade. At the close of trade the Dow Jones index was down by 185 points or 0.6% after earlier being down 239 points and up by 586 points. The S&P 500 index was down by 0.7% and the Nasdaq was lower by 35 points or 0.3%.
