European sharemarkets fell on Monday. Reuters reported the Kremlin as saying that there were no concrete plans for a summit over Ukraine between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden, after the French president said the two leaders had agreed on a meeting in principle. President Putin told French and German leaders that he planned to recognise two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine - and President Putin carried out those plans in the US afternoon. Technology shares fell the most, down by 2.6%. The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell by 1.3% to a 4-month low. The German Dax index lost 2.1% and the UK FTSE index eased by 0.4%. In London trade, shares in Rio Tinto rose by 0.7% while shares in BHP fell by 0.5%.
US sharemarkets were closed on Monday for the Presidents Day holiday. On Friday, the Dow Jones index closed down by 233 points or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.7% with the Nasdaq index dropping 169 points or 1.2%.

The Australian sharemarket finished 0.16% higher on Monday despite being down close to 1% this morning. Reports that US and Russian leaders are open to meet provided some support. AGL Energy rose after receiving a takeover offer, while The a2 Milk Company rose by ~11% after flagging a stronger second half.

The a2 Milk Company (A2M) and bedding retailer Adairs (ADH) released their half year results. A2M’s profits more than halved due partly to a lower birth rate and greater competition in China, however it expects to deliver revenue growth in the second half. ADH recorded a 60% tumble in earnings due largely to government mandated store closures and supply chain challenges.

US sharemarkets fell on Friday as investors squared positions ahead of a long weekend. Fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine dominated trade as well as monthly option expiry. Shares in chipmaker Intel fell 5.3% after it said it sees no major improvements in profit margins before 2025. The Dow Jones index closed down by 233 points or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.7% with the Nasdaq index dropping 169 points or 1.2%. Over the week the Dow fell by 1.9%; S&P 500 fell 1.6%; and the Nasdaq fell by 1.8%.
US treasuries rose on Friday (yields lower). Comments from New York Federal Reserve President John Williams further watered down chances of a 50 basis point increase in rates in March. US 10-year yields fell by 4 points to near 1.93%. And US 2-year yields fell less than 1 point to near 1.47%. Over the week US 10-year yields rose by 1 point while US 2-year yields fell by 2 points.

Investor concerns about rising geo-political risks and the potential economic impacts of central bank policy. Shares of chipmaker Nvidia slid 7.5% after its latest forecast failed to impress investors. Tesla shares fell 5.1% after moving toward the bottom of Consumer Reports’ latest annual auto brand rankings. Shares of lithium miner Albemarle plunged 19.9% after its profit forecast disappointed. But Walmart (+4.0%) topped expectations and reaffirmed guidance. The Dow Jones index closed down by 622 points or 1.8%, near session lows and its worst decline of 2022. And the S&P 500 index lost 2.1% with the Nasdaq index dropping 407 points or 2.9%.
