Telstra (TLS) and The Star Entertainment Group (SGR) delivered their half year results. Telstra’s profits declined by a third due partly to a $450m decline in one-off NBN payments while SGR posted a $74m loss due mainly to COVID-19 related lockdowns.

Wesfarmers shares have been sold off after the company reported a 13% fall in first half net profit to $1.21 billion. Earnings at Bunnings fell 1.2%, Kmart earnings dropped 63% while Officeworks earnings declined by 18% amid government-mandated store closures and trading restrictions.

US sharemarkets fluctuated on Wednesday as investors assessed Russia-Ukraine tensions. The latest US Federal Reserve minutes were seen as more 'dovish' than what traders were expecting. Shares of media company ViacomCBS plunged 17.8% on disappointing earnings. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 55 points or 0.2% after being down 346 points at session lows. But the S&P 500 index rose by 0.1% with the Nasdaq index dipping 16 points or 0.1%. US treasury yields fell on Wednesday amid rising geo-political uncertainty. The US Treasury sold US$19 billion of 20-year bonds at a yield of 2.40% into robust demand. US 10-year yields fell by 2 points to near 2.03%. And US 2-year yields lost 6 points to near 1.51%.

Iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) reported a 32% fall in profit in the first half of the year as a result of higher costs and falling iron ore prices. Consequently the group paid an interim dividend of 86 cents per share, down from $1.47 in the previous corresponding period.

US sharemarkets were firmer on Tuesday. Investors perceived a de-escalation of tensions between Ukraine and Russia. Benefitting were banks and so-called 'mega cap' technology stocks. Travel-dependent stocks also lifted sharply on re-opening hopes. Shares in Intel rose 1.8% after it announced a $5.4 billion deal to buy Israeli chipmaker Tower Semiconductor. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 423 points or 1.2%. The S&P 500 index was up 1.6%. And the Nasdaq index rose by 349 points or 2.5%.
US treasuries were mixed on Tuesday. Investors dissected news on Ukraine together with data showing a solid lift in US producer prices in the latest month. US 10-year yields rose by 6 points to 2.05%. But US 2-year yields fell by 1 point to 1.58%.
