US sharemarkets fell sharply in the final hour of trade. But shares in Travelers (up 3.2%) and Baker Hughes (up 1.6%) rose after posting earnings results. Shares in 'stay-at-home' stock Peloton fell 23.9% on a report indicating that it was pausing production of fitness equipment. At the close, the Dow Jones index was down by 313 points or 0.9% after earlier being up 462 points. The S&P 500 index fell by 1.1%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 186 points or 1.3%. European sharemarkets ended generally higher on Thursday. Travel stocks led the gains (up 2.9%) after Ryanair (up 4.2%) expressed confidence about a recovery in travel demand later this year. The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose by 0.5%. The German Dax index rose by 0.7% despite data showing a record rise in German producer prices in December. But the UK FTSE index eased by 0.1%. In London trade, shares in Rio Tinto fell by 1.3% while BHP shares rose by 1.2%.

US sharemarkets were weaker on Wednesday. Positive quarterly reports supported sentiment including reports from UnitedHealth (up 0.3%), Procter & Gamble (up 3.4%), Bank of America (up 0.4%) and Morgan Stanley (up 1.8%). But jitters about higher interest rates remain. The Dow Jones index closed near session lows, down by 340 points or 1.0%. The S&P 500 index fell by 1.0%. And the Nasdaq index lost 167 points or 1.2%.

US sharemarkets fell sharply on Tuesday on growing investor expectations that the US central bank will have to boost interest rates earlier-than-anticipated to combat inflation. US treasury yields hit 2-year highs, pressuring mega cap technology shares. Shares of Apple (-1.9%), Meta Platforms (-4.1%), Alphabet (-2.5%) and Amazon (-2%) all fell. Microsoft shares dipped 2.4% after announcing the US$68.7 billion purchase of video company Activision Blizzard (+25.9%). Goldman Sachs shares plunged 7% after missing fourth-quarter profit expectations on weak trading activity. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 543 points or 1.5%. The S&P 500 index lost 1.8% and the Nasdaq index shed 387 points or 2.6%, hitting its lowest level in 3 months.
