US financial markets were closed on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. There was no US economic data scheduled for release. European sharemarkets closed higher on Monday as investors digested the latest Chinese economic growth data, a global advance in sovereign bond yields and corporate developments.
The pan European STOXX 600 index rose by 0.7% with media (+1.9%) and healthcare (+1.4%) stocks both up. Credit Suisse shares slipped 2.3% after Chairman Antonio Horta-Osorio quit due to breaches of Coronavirus quarantine rules. The German Dax index rose 0.3% and the UK FTSE index gained 0.9%. Shares of GlaxoSmithKline jumped 4.1% after the British drugmaker rejected a £50 billion pound offer from Unilever (-7%) for its consumer healthcare business. In London trade, shares in Rio Tinto were flat, but BHP shares rose by 1.4%.

The Australian sharemarket bounced back from a slow start, with the ASX 200 lifting by ~0.3%. While China's growth slowed in the December quarter, GDP was above consensus and coincided with a Chinese rate cut. Most sectors finished higher.

US sharemarkets were mixed on Friday. Disappointing trading results from JPMorgan Chase (-6.2%) and Citigroup (-1.3%) weighed on the Dow Jones index. But Wells Fargo shares rose 3.7% on a bullish forecast for a measure of lending. Netflix shares gained 1.3% after a price increase for US subscribers, boosting the Nasdaq index. Shares of casino operator Las Vegas Sands surged 14.2% after Macau capped new licenses at six. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 202 points or 0.6%. But the S&P 500 index rose 0.1% and the Nasdaq index added 87 points or 0.6%. For the week, the Dow lost 0.9%. And the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both fell 0.3%

US sharemarkets fell on Thursday amid widespread calls from US central bank officials to raise US interest rates. Weakness in megacap technology shares, including Tesla (-6.8%), Microsoft (-4.2%), Amazon (-2.4%) and Apple (-1.9%) weighed on the Nasdaq index. Shares of Snap plunged 10.2%. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 177 points or 0.5% after lifting 223 points earlier in the session. The S&P 500 index lost 1.4% and the Nasdaq index dropped 382 points or 2.5%. US treasury yields dipped on Thursday after data showed a modest rise in US producer prices in December and an unexpected increase in weekly jobless claims. The US Treasury sold US$22 billion of 30-year notes at a yield of 2.075% into solid demand. US 10-year yields fell by 3 points to near 1.695%. And US 2-year yields slid by 1 point to near 0.89%.
