Oil Search (OSH) posted a US$39.4mn loss for FY15. The result was held back by a slump in oil and gas prices together with a US$399.3mn impairment charge attributed to its Taza asset in Kurdistan.

Qantas Airways Limited (QAN) reported Underlying profit before tax of $921 million, up from $554 million, helped by higher international demand, tight cost management and the continued fall in fuel costs.

BHP Billiton (BHP) reported an underlying attributable profit of US$412 million for the half year ending December 2015. The result was below market expectations with the changes to its dividend policy also a shock to investors.

European shares rose on Monday as a lift in mining stocks supported the broader market. The lift in copper prices to a two-week higher resulted in Glencore gaining 11%, while Anglo America lifted by over 10%. The comments last Friday by the ECB policymaker Vitor Constancio continued to support the banking sector. Constancio said that further economic stimulus could be delivered in a way that mitigates "the immediate, direct impact on the costs on banks".  The STOXX euro banking index rose by 3.8%. The FTSEurofirst 300 index rose by 1.7%. The German Dax rose by 2% while the UK FTSE gained 1.5%. In London trade shares in BHP Billiton rallied up 8.5% while Rio Tinto gained 8.4%.

 

* US sharemarkets rallied on Monday as the lift in oil and other commodities supported material stocks. Overall gains were broad-based with all 10 major S&P sectors higher. At the close of trade left the Dow Jones was up by 228 points or 1.4%, the S&P 500 index higher by 1.5% while the Nasdaq lifted by 66 points or 1.5%

The ASX 200 has jumped 48 points or 1% to close back above 5,000. The Industrials sector was the standout, rising 2.2%, while gains in mining and banking stocks lifted the market.
