US sharemarkets ended lower on Thursday with investors surprised by the Bank of Japan's decision to cap monetary stimulus. All major 10 S&P 500 sectors were lower. Shares of Apple lost a further 3% after investor Carl Icahn confirmed he no longer had a position. The Dow Jones fell by 211 points or 1.2%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.9% and the Nasdaq lost 58 points or 1.2%.

US sharemarkets ended mixed on Wednesday. The share price of Apple fell by 6.3% in response to its earnings result, in turn weighing on other technology stocks. But energy companies rose on a higher oil price. The Dow Jones ended higher by 51 points or 0.3% after trading in a 164 point range. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.2% but the Nasdaq lost 25 points or 0.4%.
