The Consumer Price Index – the main measure of inflation in Australia – rose by 0.7% in the September quarter, above expectations for a lift of 0.4-0.5%. The annual rate of inflation rose from a 17-year low of 1.0% to 1.3%.

The local share market is down 1.4% at mid-session, weighed down by heavy falls in consumer and energy stocks. Mining and banking stocks are also dragging the market lower.

US sharemarkets eased on Tuesday in response to mixed earnings and economic data. Shares in 3M fell by 2.9% after the company trimmed earnings forecasts. And shares in Whirlpool fell by 10.8% with revenue for the appliance maker hit by a stronger currency. But shares in Procter & Gamble rose by 3.4% after its profit topped expectations. The Dow Jones index fell by 54 points or 0.3% after holding in a 90 point trading range. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.4% while the Nasdaq eased by 26 points or 0.5%.

The local share market is off to a strong start, boosted by a positive lead from Wall Street and gains in the financial, resource and healthcare sectors.

US sharemarkets rose on Monday with investor confidence boosted by news that AT&T had agreed to buy Time Warner for US$85.4 billion. Shares in AT&T fell by 1.7% with Time Warner down by 3.1%. And China Oceanwide Holdings has pledged $3.8 billion in a deal to take control of insurer Genworth Financial. There was some caution ahead of a big week of earnings results. The Dow Jones index rose by 77 points or 0.4% after being up by 130 points in early trade. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.5% while the Nasdaq lifted by over 52 points or 1.0%.

US sharemarkets were mixed on Friday. After releasing earnings results, shares in Microsoft rose by 4.3% with McDonald's up 3%. According to Thomson Reuters 23% of S&P 500 companies have reported earnings and the expectation is that annual earnings growth was 1.1%, up from the estimate of +0.5% at the start of the earnings season. The Dow Jones index ended lower by almost 17 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index fell by less than 0.1% while the Nasdaq lifted by almost 16 points or 0.3%. Over the week the Dow rose by less than 0.1%, the S&P 500 rose by 0.4% and the Nasdaq gained 0.8%. Over the weekend, AT&T said it had agreed to buy Time Warner for $US85.4 billion (A$112 billion).
