Gaming giants Tabcorp & Tatts Group have announced an $11 billion merger which will effectively give Tabcorp control of the merged business.

The ASX 200 is up 0.4% at mid-session, with almost all sectors gaining ground. Materials and Consumer Staples are bucking the trend.

US sharemarkets rose on Tuesday in response to generally encouraging earnings results. Shares in Netflix rose 19% after releasing its latest activity data. Shares in Goldman Sachs rose by 2.2%. According to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S of the 52 S&P 500 companies that have reported results to date for the third quarter, 81% have reported earnings that have beaten consensus forecasts. The Dow Jones index ended higher by 75.5 points or 0.4% with the S&P 500 index up by 0.6% while the Nasdaq lifted 44 points or 0.9%.

China will release Q3 GDP growth out at 10:00 Beijing time (13:00 Sydney time).

After four days of losses, the ASX 200 has finished firmer, rising 22 points or 0.4%. Buyers fetched healthcare, materials and financial stocks, while IT and Industrials were out of favour.

US sharemarkets ended lower on Monday on investor caution about forthcoming earnings results. Investors also are increasingly uncertain about the interest rate outlook after Federal Reserve vice-chair Stanley Fischer said it was "not that simple" for the Fed to lift rates. A lower oil price weighed on the energy sector. The Dow Jones index ended lower by 52 points or 0.3% with the S&P 500 index down by 0.3% while the Nasdaq lost 14 points or 0.3%.
