US sharemarkets pared gains on Wednesday to end slightly lower after investors mulled the Trump Administration tax plan and awaited more detail on the proposals. Shares in Twitter rose by 7.9% with investors impressed by data showing a 6% lift in active users and revenues that beat forecasts. After being up 74 points, the Dow Jones ended lower by 21 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.1% while the Nasdaq ended flat.

Inflation rose by a softer than expected 0.5% in the March quarter, taking the annual increase to 2.1%. Underlying inflation, the Reserve Bank’s preferred measure, came in at 0.4% in the quarter and 1.7% over the year.

US sharemarkets posted solid gains for a second day. Earnings data encouraged investors. Shares in McDonalds rose by 5.6% with shares in Caterpillar up 7.9% in response to better-than-expected earnings. Also boosting sentiment was the expectation that President Trump would announce tax cuts in reform plans to be released on Wednesday. The Dow Jones index rose by 232 points or 1.1% after rising 216 points on Monday. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.6% while the Nasdaq gained almost 42 points or 0.7% to record highs.
