The CoreLogic Home Value Index of capital city home prices fell by 1.1 per cent in May but was up 8.3 per cent over the year. It was the biggest monthly fall in prices in 18 months. In regional Australia, house prices fell by 0.2 per cent in April (latest available) and were 4.5 per cent higher than a year ago.
Dwelling prices rose in just two of the eight capital cities in May: Adelaide (up 0.8 per cent), Brisbane (up 0.3 per cent). Darwin (down 3.5 per cent), Melbourne (down 1.7 per cent), Sydney (down 1.3 per cent), Perth (down 0.4 per cent) and Canberra (down 0.1 per cent).

US sharemarkets eased on Wednesday with financials weighing on key indexes. The Dow Jones fell by almost 21 points or 0.1%, the S&P 500 index lost 0.1% while the Nasdaq fell by 5 points or 0.1%. Over May the Dow rose 0.3% with the S&P 500 up 1.2% and the Nasdaq gained 2.5%. Pending homes index eased by 1.3% to 109.8 in April (forecast +0.5%).

The Australian sharemarket is holding onto modest gains at lunch on Wednesday in what has been a difficult month for local equities. Although banks are up today, they have been the main drag on the broader market since news of the Bank Levy.
