European sharemarkets were mixed on Monday in quiet trade with China, the US and UK markets closed for holidays. Polls suggests that the risk of an early election in Italy has risen to 60% with a hung parliament seen as the likely outcome. Also shares in International Airlines Group, the parent company of British Airways, fell 2.8%. British Airways flights were massively disrupted over the weekend due to a computer system failure. The Euro STOXX 600 index fell by 0.1% while the German Dax was higher by 0.2%. The Italian sharemarket fell 2% to a three-week low with the banking sector down by 3.3%.

 

US sharemarkets were closed for the Memorial Day holiday. Last week the Dow rose by 1.3%, the S&P 500 rose by 1.4% and the Nasdaq lifted 2.1%.

The ASX 200 has finished a choppy session down 44 points or 0.8% to 5,707 - held down by heavy falls from the banks.

It has been a lacklustre start to the week for the Australian share market with losses in the financial sector weighing on the benchmark ASX 200 index.

US sharemarkets ended flat on Friday. Shares in Costco Warehouse rose 1.8% after reporting earnings results. Trading volumes were the lightest of the year ahead of the Memorial Day holiday. The Dow Jones fell by almost 3 points or less than 0.1% with the S&P 500 index up by less than 1 point to record highs while the Nasdaq lifted by 5 points or 0.1% to record highs. Over the week the Dow rose by 1.3%, the S&P 500 rose by 1.4% and the Nasdaq lifted 2.1%.

The local share market has lost yesterday’s gains, following heavy falls in the energy sector. The ASX 200 lost 0.7% on Friday. However, it managed to gain 0.4% over the week.

The local share market is under pressure on Friday, as energy stocks suffer large losses. Investors are disappointed with an OPEC deal overnight to extend production cuts only by another nine months.

US sharemarkets posted firm gains on Thursday. While the energy sector weakened with a drop in the oil price, a number of retail stocks rallied in response to encouraging sales figures. Shares in Best Buy soared 21.5% with shares in Sears up 13.5%. The Dow Jones rose by 70 points or 0.3% with the S&P 500 index up by 0.4% to record highs while the Nasdaq lifted by 42 points or 0.7% to record highs.

The ASX 200 has closed up 0.4%, helped by a rally in energy stocks ahead of tonight’s OPEC meeting in Vienna.
