US sharemarkets rose on Wednesday following the minutes of the Federal Reserve's latest meeting. However the retail sector issued more results that were disappointing. The US Federal Reserve minutes from the May 2-3 FOMC meeting indicated that most participants saw it would be appropriate to raise rates again 'soon' (as expected). The consensus was a 'gradual approach" to raising rates. Most participants saw the recent weakness in growth and inflation as transitory.

US sharemarkets rose on Tuesday as traders assessed White House budget proposals. The budget plan was largely as expected, including measures to increase infrastructure and military spending and cut government spending by $3.6 trillion over a period of 10 years. US economic data was generally softer than expected. And investors digested news of a terror attack in Manchester, England. The Dow Jones rose by 44 points or 0.2% with the S&P 500 index up by 0.2% while the Nasdaq lifted by 5 points or 0.1%.

US sharemarkets rose on Monday. Defence stocks were amongst the top gainers after President Trump signed US$110 billion in deals for Saudi Arabia to buy arms from the US with options to buy up to $350 billion in equipment over 10 years. Technology stocks also posted solid gains. The so-called "fear gauge" - the CBOE volatility index or Vix - fell by 9% to 10.96. The Dow Jones rose by 90 points or 0.4% with the S&P 500 index up by 0.5% while the Nasdaq lifted by almost 50 points or 0.8%.
