US sharemarkets rose on Friday but ended off session highs as traders focussed on political problems faced by President Trump. Reuters reported "A senior White House adviser is a significant person of interest in the law enforcement investigation of possible Russian ties, the Washington Post reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter."
The so-called "fear gauge" - the CBOE volatility index or Vix - fell by 17.9% to 12.04. The Dow Jones rose by 142 points or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.7% while the Nasdaq lifted by almost 29 points or 0.5%. Over the week the Dow Jones and S&P 500 fell 0.4% and the Nasdaq lost 0.6%.

Economy-wide spending remained unchanged in April, after revised growth of 0.1% in March. Annual trend growth in sales slowed from 5.9% to a 4-month low of 5.8%.
- The Commonwealth Bank Business Sales Indicator (BSI) – a measure of economy-wide spending – was broadly unchanged in April after a revised 0.1 per cent gain in March.

US sharemarkets rebounded on Thursday as upbeat economic data supported investor sentiment. Bargain hunters moved in after the biggest sell-off in eight months in the prior session. The strongest gains were in the healthcare and financial sector. Cisco fell 7% after the quarterly revenue missed analyst expectations. The so-called "fear gauge" - the CBOE volatility index or Vix - fell by 6% after rising by 42% in the prior session. The Dow Jones rose by 56 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.4% while the Nasdaq rose by 44 points or 0.7%.
