US sharemarkets rallied on Monday, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both hitting fresh record highs. The global cyber-attack boosted technology stocks, while the rise in the oil price drove the resource sector higher. Broker upgrades to Bluechip stocks like Johnson & Johnson and Cisco Systems boosted the S&P 500. Nine of the major 11 S&P 500 sectors were higher with the material sector leading the gains (0.8%). The Dow Jones rose by 85 points or 0.4%, the S&P 500 index rose 0.5% while the Nasdaq lifted by 28 points or 0.5%.

US sharemarkets fell on Thursday after disappointing earnings at number of department stores raised concerns about consumer spending. Macy's shares fell 17% after weak quarterly performance. Kohl fell 7.9% while shares in Nordstrom (-7.5%) and J.C Penny (6.7%) also fall sharply. Shares of Snap, the owners of Snapchat fell 21% after missing on a number of key earnings metrics. All of the 11 major S&P sectors were lower. The Dow Jones fell by almost 24 points or 0.1%, the S&P 500 index fell by 0.2% while the Nasdaq lost 13 points or 0.2%.
