US sharemarkets posted firm gains on Thursday with key indexes at or near record highs. Shares in Morgan Stanley rose by 3.3% after reporting better-than-expected earnings. But shares in IBM fell 4.2% after the company reported earnings for the second quarter that fell short of forecasts. The Dow Jones closed higher by 66 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 rose by 0.5% and the Nasdaq rose by almost 41 points or 0.6%.

Economy-wide spending continued to post firm growth in June with all states and territories recording gains as well as all but one industry sector. The Commonwealth Bank Business Sales Indicator (BSI) rose by 0.7 per cent in trend terms in June after a similar gain in May.

US sharemarkets were mixed on Tuesday as investors reacted to earnings season and the collapse of the US Senate healthcare bill. The Dow was dragged lower by a 2.6% drop in Goldman Sachs on disappointing commodity and bond trading revenue. However the Nasdaq hit fresh intra-day record highs after Netflix rallied by 14% following upbeat earnings. IBM reported earnings after the close and missed on revenue estimates. The Dow Jones closed down 55 points or 0.3% after being down as much as 154 points in early trade. The S&P 500 rose by 0.1% and the Nasdaq rose by almost 30 points or 0.5%.

The ASX 200 has fallen back below the 5,700 point mark, slipping 1.2% today. The local currency is trading around 79.2 US cents, boosted by the release of RBA Board Minutes which showed members are cautiously optimistic about the economy.

US sharemarkets were largely flat as gains in utilities and consumer stocks were offset by declines in healthcare. Traders waited on a number of key earnings after the close. According to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S US S&P 500 earnings are expected to grow by 8% compared with a year ago. After the close, shares in Netflix rallied by 9% following upbeat earnings, driven by a surge in subscriber growth. The Dow Jones fell by 8 points. The S&P 500 was unchanged and the Nasdaq rose by 2 points.
