Australian shares rebounded strongly from the three-week lows hit on Wednesday, with the ASX 200 index up 1.1 per cent or 63pts to 5736.8. While this was enough to reclaim yesterday’s losses, the overall dynamics have not changed much. The market remains range bound in the absence of a meaningful fresh catalyst.

Locally, ~90 per cent of companies on the ASX 200 are improving with all sectors in positive territory. Healthcare stocks are among the best largely thanks to CSL rising 2.5 per cent. The blood products maker has recouped most of yesterday’s losses which were triggered by concerns of more competition in the flu vaccine business.

US sharemarkets posted solid gains in response to the "dovish" or less aggressive monetary stance adopted by the Federal Reserve chair. The Dow Jones rose by 123 points or 0.6%. The S&P 500 rose by 0.7% and the Nasdaq gained almost 68 points or 1.1%.

The Australian sharemarket fell for the first time since last Friday and hit a three-week low in the process. 85% of companies finished in negative territory. Slater & Gordon (SGH) and Adairs (ADH) were two of the better performers.

The Australian market is in negative territory for the first time since last Friday, with the ASX 200 down ~0.8%. Around 85% of companies are losing ground with mining stocks the only improvers.

US sharemarkets finished mixed. Stocks fell in early trade after President Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Junior, released an email chain referring to a meeting held with a Russian government lawyer. But stocks recovered as the Senate delayed the start of the August recess in order to progress with more legislation. Investors await profit results from JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Citigroup on Friday. Federal Reserve chair Janel Yellen testifies on the economy on Wednesday and Thursday. The Dow Jones rose by 0.55 points or less than 0.1% after being down 129 points at one stage. The S&P 500 was down by 0.1% and the Nasdaq gained almost 17 points or 0.3%.

The Australian market recovered in the final two hours of trade in relatively volatile trade. The ASX 200 index finished 0.1 per cent firmer after falling as much as 0.4 per cent at its low and rising 0.35 per cent at its highs. This marks the second straight session of gains despite a mixed lead from Wall Street overnight. Energy and mining stocks were standouts today thanks to a 0.4 per cent lift in oil and 2.7 per cent rise in iron ore overnight. BHP Billiton (BHP), Rio Tinto (RIO), Fortescue Metals (FMG), BC Iron (BCI) and Atlas Iron o (AGO) all finished higher.

Australian shares have recovered from a sluggish start and at lunch the ASX 200 is up 0.2 per cent. While US markets finished largely flat in light trade, commodity prices were mostly higher which is helping the miners perform best. Elsewhere, the market is split evenly between winners and losers, with 101 of the 200 biggest stocks higher.
