Shares of Apple (+1.8%), Amazon (+0.6%), 3M (+1.5%) and Oracle (+3.6%) amongst the top performers. But shares of Chevron (-1.0%) fell as the oil price declined and Goldman Sachs (-0.6%) shares were weighed down by falling bond yields. The Dow Jones index rose by 104 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index also added 0.3% and the Nasdaq index was up by 1 point or less than 0.1% -both closing at record highs.

The Aussie market has bounced back from Tuesday’s losses with the ASX 200 adding 65pts or 0.9% to 7,327. While energy & travel stocks were weaker, the majority of the market improved with technology, particularly BNPL, and healthcare among the most improved.

Aussie shares are rising at lunch on Wednesday despite the confirmation of the lockdown for parts of NSW. Leading improvements are IT, communications and healthcare while travel stocks are generally lower and energy stocks fall on a rollercoaster ride for oil prices.

The Dow Jones index was dragged down by losses in Dow (-2.5%), Caterpillar (-2.0%), JPMorgan (-1.7%) and Chevron (-2.0%) shares as US treasuries rallied and oil prices fell. But shares of Amazon jumped 4.7% to a record high after the US Department of Defence cancelled its US$10 billion JEDI cloud contract with Microsoft (flat) and solicited proposals from both companies. Didi Global shares plunged 19.6% after Chinese regulators ordered the ride-hailing company's app be taken down days after its US listing. The Dow Jones index fell by 209 points or 0.6%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.2%, ending a streak of seven consecutive closing record highs. But the Nasdaq index was up by 24 points or 0.2%.

The ASX 200 has closed at the lows of the day with the index falling 53pts or 0.73% to 7261 on Tuesday following the RBA rate decision this afternoon. While most sectors fell, energy stocks rose on firmer oil prices while department store Myer (MYR) rallied nearly 15% today.

The Reserve Bank (RBA) has left the target rates for both the cash rate and 3-year government bond yield (April 2024 maturity) at 0.1 per cent. The RBA will slow its bond-buying program from early September, reducing its weekly bond purchases from $5 billion to $4 billion until at least mid-November.

European sharemarkets advanced on Monday. The pan-European STOXX 600 index lifted by 0.3%. Banks (+1.7%), materials (+1.5%) and travel (+1.2%) shares led gains. IHS Markit’s final Eurozone composite purchasing managers index (PMI) reading came in at 15-year high of 59.5, up from 57.1 in May.The German Dax index rose by 0.1%. The UK FTSE index gained 0.6% after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out plans to end virus restrictions on July 19. Shares of Morrisons (+11.6%) jumped to a near 8-year high after US private equity company Apollo Global Management became the third suitor for the British supermarket group. In London trade, shares in Rio Tinto and BHP both lifted by 1.4%.
