The ASX 200 has managed to etch out a small gain of 10pts or 0.15% to close at 7,292. The index hit another all-time high earlier in the session but was hampered by losses for several banks and the big miners. Tech stocks were the stand out following improvements from US tech names overnight.

The Aussie market is struggling to hold onto gains made on the open. The ASX 200 briefly topped a new intraday record high of 7,315 in the first hour but is coming back from those levels at midday. Losses for several big name banks and miners are weighing most.

Materials fell the most, down 1.2%, while real estate led the gains, up 0.9%. Shares of Biogen surged 38.3% on news that the Food and Drug Administration approved its Alzheimer's disease drug, aducanumab. So-called 'meme' stocks remained in focus with shares in AMC Entertainment up 14.8%. At the close of trade, the Dow was lower by 126 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.1%. But the Nasdaq index was up by 67 points or 0.5%.

The Aussie market enjoyed early gains to hit another record intraday high, before fading to finish the day lower by 13 points or 0.2% at 7,282. US sharemarkets were pushed higher by gains in technology shares. Megacaps Microsoft (+2.1%) and Apple (+1.9%) both lifted, as longer-dated US Treasury yields fell. Shares of Salesforce.com (+2.9%) and Intel (+2%) were among the strongest performers on the Dow Jones index. At the close of trade, the Dow added 179 points or 0.5% to be less than 0.1% below its all-time high. The S&P 500 index gained 0.9% to be less than 3 points below its May 7 record closing high. And the Nasdaq index was up by 200 points or 1.5%. Over the week the Dow Jones rose by 0.7% with the S&P 500 up by 0.6% and the Nasdaq 0.5% higher.
