Strong economic data prompted concerns that the US Federal Reserve may withdraw its stimulus earlier-than-expected. But equities pared back some losses after a report US President Joe Biden may be open to a lower corporate tax rate than 28%, instead setting a 15% minimum tax rate for companies. Shares of General Motors jumped 6.4% on 'significantly better' first-half results. Rival Ford's shares rose 7.2%. But Tesla lost 5.3% on reports of weak China sales. The Dow Jones index fell by 23 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.4% and the Nasdaq index was down by 142 points or 1%.

The energy sector led gains in response to a higher oil price. But the materials sector eased. Reuters noted "shares of AMC Entertainment jumped 100.2%, leading a surge in a group of stocks favoured by retail investors on forums such as Reddit's WallStreetBets." The Australian economy (as measured by gross domestic product or GDP) grew by 1.8 per cent in the March quarter after rising 3.2 per cent in the December quarter and lifting 3.5 per cent in the September quarter. The economy now exceeds the pre-pandemic highs, up 1.1 per cent on the year. It has been the fastest recovery from recession in 45 years.

Energy shares rose in line with the oil price. And financials also advanced. But healthcare and technology shares were weaker. Shares of AMC Entertainment rose 22.7% after the movie theatre chain said it sold $230 million of its stock. Shares in Abbott Labs fell by 9.3% after the company cut its full-year 2021 profit forecast. The Dow Jones index rose by 46 points or 0.1%. But the S&P 500 index eased by 0.1%.
