Investors weighed risks to the economic outlook posed by inflation and a spike in Covid-19 cases in parts of Asia. Shares of big technology companies Apple and Netflix both fell 0.9% with Microsoft down 1.2%. Discovery's Class B shares rose 13.8% after a deal to merge with AT&T's (-2.7%) media unit was announced. Shares of cryptocurrency stock Coinbase Global (-3.9%) fell to a record low amid Bitcoin volatility after Elon Musk said that Tesla "has not sold any Bitcoin" in a tweet. Tesla shares lost 2.2%. The Dow Jones index fell by 54 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.3% and the Nasdaq index shed 51 points or 0.4%.

Local shares closed Monday’s session with a small improvement. The ASX 200 ended 9pts or 0.13% higher at 7,023. Energy and gold mining stocks were some of the biggest improvers while Crown Resorts (CWN) rose having rejected a takeover bid from Blackstone.

US sharemarkets were led higher by technology shares. Facebook (+3.5%), Tesla (+3.2%), Alphabet (+2.2%) and Microsoft (+2.1%) shares all lifted. Apple and Amazon shares both climbed around 2%. Airbnb shares gained 4% as bookings jumped. Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line shares both surged more than 8%. But Walt Disney shares fell 2.6% on disappointing subscriber growth numbers. The Dow Jones index rose by 361 points or 1.1%. The S&P 500 index gained 1.5% and the Nasdaq index climbed 305 points or 2.3%. Over the week the Dow fell 1.1%, the S&P 500 lost 1.4% and the Nasdaq shed 2.3%.

Investors rotated to value from growth companies as signs of a strengthening job market tempered inflation concerns. American Airlines (+2.2%), United Airlines (+2.8%) and Delta Air Lines (+2.2%) all advanced as virus restrictions were eased. Boeing shares were 0.8% higher after gaining approval from US regulators for a fix of an electrical grounding issue. Apple (+1.8%) and Microsoft (+1.7%) shares lifted, while Tesla (-3.1%) lost ground. Shares of Disney were up 0.3% ahead of its quarterly results. The Dow Jones index rose by 434 points or 1.3%. The S&P 500 index gained 1.2% and the Nasdaq index climbed 93 points or 0.7%.
