There was a decline in technology shares as key inflation data showed higher-than-expected US consumer price pressures. Shares of Tesla (-4.4%), Microsoft (-2.9%), Apple (-2.5%) and Alphabet (-3.1%) all declined. Shares of Bumble slipped 6.7% ahead of the online dating platform's first-quarter results. But energy shares lifted with the crude oil price with Schlumberger (+2.7%), Occidental Petroleum (+2.4%) and Chevron (+0.6%) all trading higher. The Dow Jones index fell by 681.5 points or 2%. The S&P 500 index lost 2.1% and the Nasdaq index dropped 358 points or 2.7%.
