The ASX 200 index is now only 25pts away from hitting its all-time record highs after it managed to eclipse its previous closing record high today. Miners led what was a strong session for local shares with Fortescue Metals (FMG) one of the best climbing 7.9%.

Weaker-than-expected US jobs data eased investor concerns about higher inflation and a cutback in stimulus. Growth stocks Microsoft (+1.1%) and Apple (+0.5%) both rose. Upbeat earnings results from payments firm Square (+4.2%), streaming device maker Roku (+11.6%) and online travel company Expedia (+5.2%) boosted sentiment. The Dow Jones index rose by 229 points or 0.7% and the S&P 500 index also added 0.7% - both closing at record highs. And the Nasdaq index lifted 119 points or 0.9%. Over the week the Dow rose 2.7% and the S&P 500 lifted 1.2%, but the Nasdaq shed 1.5%.

The Australian sharemarket rose for a fourth time in five days, with the ASX 200 approaching 14 ½ month highs in the process. While tech stocks were by far the hardest hit this week, gold stocks were the strongest performers.

PayPal shares lifted 1.9% after the company posted better-than-expected earnings. Costco shares jumped 2.8% after the retailer said that its April sales surged 33.5%. Regeneron Pharmaceutical shares were up 3.4% on a better-than-expected quarterly profit. Shares of vaccine makers Pfizer (-1.0%) and Moderna (-1.4%) both fell after US President Joe Biden backed plans to waive patents on Covid-19 shots. Uber shares slid 8.9%. The Dow Jones index rose by 318 points or 0.9% to a record closing high. The S&P 500 index added 0.8% and the Nasdaq index lifted 50 points or 0.4%.

The Aussie market has snapped its three day winning run with the ASX falling on concerns over increased COVID restrictions in Greater Sydney. The ASX 200 fell 34pts or 0.5% as technology and travel stocks were some of the hardest hit names.
