The release of strong economic data underscored a booming US economy. Megacap technology shares rose ahead of earnings reports this week with Apple (+1.8%) and Tesla (+1.4%) both up. But blue chip shares of Honeywell (-2.1%), American Express (-1.9%) and Intel (-5.3%) weighed on the Dow Jones index after their quarterly results. Kimberly-Clark (-5.9%) reported a steep sales decline. But Snap shares jumped 7.5% after reporting strong first quarter results. The Dow Jones index closed up by 228 points or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index gained 1.1% and the Nasdaq index added 198 points or 1.4%. For the week, the Dow Jones index fell 0.5%, the S&P 500 index lost 0.1% and the Nasdaq index dipped 0.3%.

There was mixed economic data and renewed concern the pandemic was worsening. Investor sentiment was also dampened after Reuters reported that US President Joe Biden will propose raising the marginal income tax rate to 39.6% from 37% and nearly double taxes on capital gains to 39.6% for people earning more than US$1 million. American Airlines (-4.5%) and Southwest Airlines (-1.6%) both reported smaller-than-expected quarterly losses. Shares of AT&T rallied 4.2% after beating profit estimates. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was down by 321 points or 0.9%. The S&P 500 index also lost 0.9% and the Nasdaq index dropped 132 points or 0.9%.

Local shares built on a shaky start to close well higher on Thursday. The ASX 200 added 58pts or 0.8% as it enjoyed its best daily improvement in 2 weeks. Improvements were broad with nearly all sectors lifting. Investors remained busy with another busy day of company quarterly or business updates.

Nine of the 11 S&P 500 sectors rose, with only communication services and utilities falling. Shares in Netflix fell by 7.4% after it disappointed with data on subscriber growth in the first quarter. But boosting the broader S&P 500 index were shares in Tesla (up 3.5%) and Microsoft (up 0.9%). The Dow Jones index rose by 316 points or 0.9%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.9%. And the Nasdaq index lifted by 164 points or 1.2%.
