While the ASX 200 still closed lower for a second successive session, it could have been a far larger fall with the benchmark index down roughly 110 points or 1.5% at lunch. A turnaround for the banks and miners, which were a major drag early, helped with the recovery.

Investors fretted about a global lift in coronavirus cases. Defensive sectors like real estate and utilities held up best while airlines and cruise liners fell the most. Shares in Boeing fell by 4.1% following the departure of its finance chief. But shares in IBM rose 3.8% after recording the biggest rise in quarterly sales in more than two years. The Dow Jones index fell by 256 points or 0.8%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.7%. And the Nasdaq index lost 128.5 points or 0.9%. After the close of trade, shares in Netflix were down by 10% in response to its earnings result.

Aussie shares have managed to lift for a fifth consecutive session with the ASX 200 slowly inching towards all-time highs. The big banks & miners were the main contributors to the market’s small improvements while BNPL & energy names underperformed.

The ASX 200 is adding 24 points or 0.34% to 7,087 around midday as the benchmark index nears the all-time highs hit in February last year, currently ~1.6% away from the high of 7,197. The broader All Ords is now trading at record levels for a third day in a row. US markets also traded at record high levels.
