US sharemarkets rose after the release of strong company earnings and economic data. Morgan Stanley posted stronger-than-expected earnings, but the bank's shares fell 2.8% as it also disclosed an almost US$1 billion loss from the collapse of private fund Archegos. Shares of PNC Financial gained 2.3% after the bank beat estimates for its first-quarter report. The Dow Jones index rose by 165 points or 0.5% and the S&P 500 index gained 0.4% -both closing at record highs. The Nasdaq index added 14 points or 0.1%. For the week, the S&P 500 index rose 1.4%, the Dow Jones index added 1.2% and the Nasdaq index gained 1.1%.

Thursday saw the Dow Jones index topping 34,000 points for the first time ever. Falling bond yields sparked buying of technology stocks with shares of Netflix (+1.7%), Facebook (+1.7%), Alphabet (+1.9%) and Apple (+1.9%) all up. Shares of BlackRock (+2.1%) rose as its quarterly profit beat estimates. Bank of America (-2.9%) and Citigroup's (-0.5%) shares both fell after releasing earnings. Pepsi shares added 0.1% after quarterly sales topped estimates. UnitedHealth shares gained 3.8% after the insurer raised 2021 guidance. The Dow Jones index rose by 305 points or 0.9% and the S&P 500 index gained 1.1% -both closing at record highs. The Nasdaq index added 181 points or 1.3%.

Investors digested the first major results of the profit-reporting season. In response to earnings results shares in Goldman Sachs rose by 2.3% and shares in Wells Fargo rose by 5.5% but shares in JP Morgan Chase fell by 1.9% despite the fact that the bank's profit jumped by almost 400%. The Dow Jones index rose by 54 points or 0.2%. But the S&P 500 index fell 0.4% from record highs. And the Nasdaq index fell by 138 points or 1.0%.
