President Biden signed the stimulus bill. Investors were also encouraged by a fall in new jobless claims. Technology and consumer discretionary led the gains while financials fell. Shares in software maker Oracle fell 6.5% in response to quarterly revenue figures. At the close, the Dow Jones index was up by 189 points or 0.6% to record highs. The S&P 500 index lifted by 1.0% to record highs. And the Nasdaq index was up by 330 points or 2.5%.

The rotation into cyclical and value stocks resumed. US House Democrats passed a US$1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package. Tame consumer prices data for February eased concerns about a spike in inflation and elevated bond yields. Shares of Boeing jumped by 6.4%, but Apple shares fell by 0.9%. Headphone maker Koss' shares soared 69.2%. Shares of gaming company Roblox jumped 54.4% in its trading debut. The Dow Jones index closed up by 464 points or 1.5%, hitting a record closing high. The S&P 500 index lifted 0.6%, but the Nasdaq index fell by 5 points or less than 0.1%.

Bond yields declined, encouraging investors to buy the dip in beaten-up technology stocks. The Nasdaq index surged over 4.0% in the trading session with Tesla shares soaring 19.6%. Apple (+4.1%), Facebook (+4.1%), Amazon (+3.8%), Microsoft (+2.8%), Netflix (+2.7%) and Peloton (+14.5%) shares all powered higher. Boeing's (+2.9%) monthly aircraft orders outpaced cancellations for first time since 2019. The US House of Representatives votes on the US$1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill on Wednesday. The Aussie market recorded its first back-to-back improvements for the first time in three weeks. It was a similar performance to Monday where early morning momentum stalled around lunch. Banks and health stocks helped lift most while IT again underperformed.

The Aussie market is experiencing a split in performance between the tech stocks and the rest of the market as investors continue to digest the moves higher for bond yields and the impact on high growth stocks. The likelihood of more US stimulus is also accelerating the rotation out of tech or ‘stay-at-home’ names.
Local shares are adding to Monday’s improvements with the ASX 200 climbing another 59 points or 0.88% to 6799 at lunch on Tuesday.

US sharemarkets were mixed on Monday. The Dow Jones index climbed, led by value and cyclical stocks poised to benefit the most from an economic rebound, after US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the US$1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief package would fuel a "very strong" US recovery. Shares of American Airlines (+5.0%) and United Airlines (+7.0%) jumped. Target shares rose 2.5%. Walt Disney shares gained 6.3% after California eased Covid-19 restrictions. But higher bond yields weighed on the shares of tech titans Apple (-4.2%), Tesla (-5.8%) and Microsoft (-1.8%). The Dow Jones index rose by 306 points or 1.0% after jumping 652 points to hit an intraday record high. But the S&P 500 index fell by 0.5% and the Nasdaq index lost 311 points or 2.4%.
