Buy now pay later provider AfterPay (APT) has reported a first half (1H FY21) loss after tax of $79.2 million. The loss after tax increased by $47.6 million, compared to the previous corresponding period (pcp) driven mainly by losses on financial liabilities totalling $64.8 million.

US sharemarkets fell sharply on Thursday. Mega cap technology shares slumped in response to rising government bond yields and profit-taking. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 560 points or 1.8% after shedding 668 points at session lows. The S&P 500 index fell by 2.5% and the Nasdaq index was down by 478 points or 3.5%.

Dairy group A2 Milk (A2M) posted a 16% slump in revenue and 35% tumble in half-year earnings as COVID-19 restrictions continued to weigh on its key daigou channel. The results were slightly below the expectations of three analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Revenue was largely in-line with the company’s own downwardly revised revenue guidance provided on 18 December, when it flagged revenue in the order of $670m and an EBITDA [earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation] margin of ~27%.

National carrier, Qantas Airways (QAN) has seen a sharp drop in its first half performance compared to this time last year but was still slightly ahead of analyst expectations. Revenue slumped by 75% to $2.33 billion while the airline fell to a statutory loss after tax of $1.08 billion while its underlying loss before tax, its preferred measure of performance, was $1.03 billion.

US Fed Chair Jerome Powell reaffirmed his view that the US economy needs further support while calming concerns about inflation. S&P 500 financial sector stocks rose 2.0% to a record high. US regulators said Johnson & Johnson's (+1.3%) Covid-19 vaccine is safe and effective. Tesla shares lifted 6.2% after the Ark Invest fund bought US$171 million more shares. Boeing shares were up 8.1%. GameStop shares surged 103.9% after its CFO resigned. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 424.5 points or 1.4% hitting a record closing high. The S&P 500 index lifted 1.1% and the Nasdaq index gained 133 points or 1.0%.

Unsurprisingly Sydney Airport (SYD) posted a decline in revenue and an annual loss due to a significant decline in passengers making their way through Australia’s busiest airport in 2020. While revenue slumped, the result was above Bloomberg consensus.
