Ahead of Friday's job report, data showed a fall in the number of people filing for unemployment benefits. Democrats are pushing ahead with efforts to secure a fiscal stimulus package in Congress. And corporate earnings continue to encourage investors. Shares in Ebay rose 5.3% and PayPal rose by 7.4% on earnings news. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 332 points or 1.1%. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.1% to record highs. And the Nasdaq index gained 167 points or 1.2% to record highs.

Shares of Alphabet surged 7.3% after the tech giant topped earnings estimates. Amazon shares dipped 2.0% as Jeff Bezos' surprise move to step down as CEO quashed optimism about bumper quarterly results. JPMorgan Chase (+1.2%) and Morgan Stanley (-0.5%) issued bullish calls on the financials industry. Shares of GameStop climbed 2.7%. Amgen shares fell 1.4% after the biotech firm issued a weaker-than-expected full year outlook. Drugmaker Biogen (-5.2%) also issued disappointing forecasts. The Dow Jones index closed up by 36 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index also rose by 0.1%. But the Nasdaq index fell by just 2 points or 0.02%.

The ASX 200 has continued its strong form this week with the index adding another 62 points or 0.92% to 6,825. While the index faded late in the day, it still managed fresh 11-month highs during the session.

The ASX 200 is extending its recent rally to a third day with the index now climbing back to the best levels since late Feb last year. The local market is broadly higher while only the mining sector falls.

Temple & Webster (TPW) posted its first half results for the six months to 31 December 2020. Revenue more than doubled to $161.6m on the same time last year, while advertising & marketing expenses close to tripled due to a TV ad campaign. This helped push underlying earnings up six-fold to $14.8m. This is close to twice its full year earnings in the 2020 financial year.

The trading frenzy that fuelled a surge in heavily shorted shares continued to ease. Shares of GameStop (-60.0%) and AMC Entertainment (-41.2%) both tumbled. Alphabet, which will report the cost and operating profit of its Google Cloud business for the first time, added 1.4%. While retail behemoth Amazon rose 1.1% and reported after market close that Andy Jassy will replace Jeff Bezos as CEO. Shares of UPS climbed 2.6% as the courier reported a surge in profit. Exxon Mobil shares lifted 1.6% on a pledge to safeguard dividends following its first annual loss in at least 40 years. The Dow Jones index closed up by 476 points or 1.6% after being 630 points higher earlier in the session. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.4% and the Nasdaq index climbed by 209 points or 1.6%.
