The S&P500 and Dow Jones indexes were lower after the release of economic data which painted a worrying picture of the US economy. President Donald Trump floated the possibility of delaying the November 3 US presidential election, unnerving investors. The tech-heavy Nasdaq index was boosted by chipmaker Qualcomm's (+15.2%) strong sales forecast. And Apple, Amazon, Alphabet and Facebook shares rose by 0.5%-1.2% ahead of their earnings releases. United Parcel Service (+14.4%) and Procter & Gamble (+2.4%) shares both rose after posting solid quarterly results. The Dow Jones index fell by 226 points or 0.9%. The S&P500 index lost 0.4%. But the Nasdaq index climbed 44 points or 0.4%.

Shares in Advanced Micro Devices rose by 12.5% after the chipmaker raised its full-year revenue forecast. Economic data was supportive for investor sentiment. Investors watched progress by Congress to come up with a coronavirus aid package. Investors also awaited the Federal Reserve decision to be announced on Wednesday. Economic data was mixed. Shares in drugmaker Pfizer was up 3.9% after it raised its full-year forecast on strong demand for cancer drugs and blood thinners. Shares in McDonalds shed 2.5% on some disappointment on its earnings results. The Dow Jones index fell by 205 points or 0.8%. The S&P500 index lost 0.7%.
