There is speculation that the resurgence in virus cases will make the US Federal Reserve reinforce its accommodative policy stance this week. Market sentiment was also boosted after the US government allocated an additional US$472 million towards Moderna’s (+9.2%) COVID-19 vaccine research. US Senate Republicans were expected to unveil a US$1 trillion coronavirus aid proposal. US infection cases slowed in California, Arizona and Florida. Apple shares rose 2.4%. But toymaker Hasbro's shares fell by 7.4% after its profit miss. The Dow Jones index rose by 114 points or 0.4%. The S&P500 index climbed 0.7%. And the Nasdaq index gained 173 points or 1.7%.

The ASX 200 has eked out a small gain to start the week, the top 200 index rose 20pts or 0.34% to 6044 as gold miners were buoyed by a record high for the price of the precious metal. Financials, energy and healthcare stocks kept a lid on broader improvements.

The Aussie market is trying to rebound from losses on Friday to kick-off the new week. The ASX 200 is slightly higher even with a new daily record for Covid-19 cases out of Victoria. Stocks that are more sensitive to the virus like travel and gaming stocks have fallen but gold stocks have shone brightest.
